Garage Door Video Tips: What Are Steel Insulated Garage Doors?

We typically get a lot of questions about “Insulated Garage Doors”, so I hope that this information will help.

Steel overhead garage doors with no insulation look pretty normal from the outside but when you’re looking at the inside of the door panel you’ll see that it’s hollow.  An insulated version of the same door would have the hollow cavity filled with poly styrene, or some kind of fiberglass insulation sheet glued into the panel.

This type of insulation provides an R value of R-6 to R-8.  An insulated garage door also adds to the solid feel of the door as well.

A modern steel insulated garage door has the polyurethane insulation injected into the door at the same time that the inside and outside door skins are rolled.
