How Can I Get My Garage Ready for Winter?
Q: How can I get my garage ready for winter?
A: We don't really want to consider that snow coming, but now is the time to start thinking about how you can winterize your garage, so it's ready to go when the winter weather hits! Whether your garage is heated or not, your goal should be to keep the cold, snow, water, and ice from getting inside when the garage door is closed. Here are 3 tips to help get your garage ready for winter:
Tip #1: Get Organized
First, you want to make sure your garage is organized. As the seasons change, so do the types of items you need to be readily available. Put away summer tools and equipment. Prep your lawnmower for winter storage. Get out your snow blower or snow shovel and make sure they're easily accessible and ready for the first snowfall. A great way to keep winter tools organized is to install hangers on one of the garage door walls and hang them up to keep them off the ground - this will also help them dry faster after you use them for snow removal.
Tip #2: Inspect Your Garage Door
Check to make sure your garage door opens and closes easily. Lubricate the door tracks if it's not moving smoothly. When the door is shut, look around the door for any light peeking though. Check the cables to make sure they don't seem loose, frayed, or rusted. (If you notice any mechanical problems, give us a call to schedule a service.) If you see light coming in, cold air can get in through these gaps and openings. You may need to have the weather-stripping replaced around the sides of the garage door, in between door panels, and the bottom of the door.
Tip # 3: Add Insulation to the Garage Door
If your garage is not insulated, there's no protection from the cold. Your best option is to upgrade to a Richards-Wilcox Neufoam insulated garage door from Garage Door Canada. It's an investment up front, but you'll be saving money on your energy bills and adding to the value of your home as well!
