Q: What are some tips to help choose a new garage door?

A: Getting a new garage door can transform the look and appearance of your home. Not only does it give your home better curb appeal, but it can also help increase your home’s value. For many people, purchasing a new garage door is something they’ve never done before. As such, it’s important to take a little time and do some research, so use our tips for selecting a new garage door for your home.

Tip #1: Know the difference between materials

There’s a difference between wood and steel garage doors. Our high-quality steel doors can be ordered with a wood look so you can get the same gorgeous results of natural wood, without the added maintenance and upkeep costs.

Tip #2: Know what the R-value on insulated garage doors means

The R-value is the resistance rating given that determines how well the insulation is at preventing energy transfer (heat loss in the winter, cold air loss in the summer). The higher the R-value the better the energy resistance and efficiency of the garage door. Buying an insulated door can also increase the value of your home even more. Our Richards-Wilcox Landmark garage door collections have either an R-value of R12 for our 1 3/8” doors or R18 for our 2” doors.

Tip #3: Select a garage door colour that complements your home’s exterior colours

A pre-finished garage door in the colour you desire is the best way to go. You can find a wide array of standard colour choices available with our residential garage doors. If you can’t find the colour you desire, let us know; we may be able to help!

Tip #4: Don’t forget about adding some windows to your garage door

Windows can help improve the visual appeal of your home. There is a wide range of windows to choose from, even frosted glass options that allow light in, but still allows privacy. With the extra light in the garage, it will be easier to see during the day too! Our models like the Grandview or the Briarcrest come with enlarged window selections.

Tip #5: Consider decorative door options

Some garage doors have options that allow for decorative features, decorative handles and straps that enhance the door’s appearance. These decorative options do not affect or alter how the door operates and functions. Yet, they can further enhance the curb appeal of your home.

By using these tips, you’ll find the perfect new garage door for your home. Feel free to explore our garage door collections right from the comfort of your home. And remember, if you have any questions, we’re here for you!
