Q: What are some tips to turn my garage into additional living space?

A: Investing in a high-quality, insulated garage door is a great way to start transforming the space in your garage into a new indoor oasis for other purposes besides parking your car. Many people use part of their garages for additional living space, such as a home office, workshop, music room, or hangout area. Regardless of what you use it for, if you're looking to add new living space to your home, check out these 6 ways on how to transform your garage:

TIP #1: UPGRADE YOUR GARAGE DOOR

Before you do anything else, you want to make sure your garage door is insulated from the hot summers and cold winters. We have many different designs and styles of garage doors for you to choose from. Click here to check out our extensive line of garage doors.

TIP #2: DECIDE HOW YOU WANT TO USE THE SPACE

You need to decide how you're going to use your new space. Do you use part of the garage to park one car or for storage? Do you want to use the entire garage for your new space? It's a good idea to draft out your design concept on paper to efficiently utilize the whole space available to you.

TIP #3: DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE CEILING SPACE

If you have a large ceiling in your garage, don’t overlook this part. Some people convert this space into storage so they can free up room on the floor-level for their new interior space. If you have sufficient room, you could even use the space for more effective interior room, like a new bedroom for your teenager.

TIP #4: INSULATE THE GARAGE

If your garage isn't fully finished, you'll want to insulate the walls. You may also want to install drywall and paint it. If you're closing off part of the garage, consider adding air vents for heating and cooling.

TIP #5: ADD FLOORING AND LIGHTING

Cover up the cement garage floor slab with some type of flooring. You'll want to also install new light fixtures to brighten up the space. If you don’t have any windows, consider a new garage door with windows to bring in more natural light.

TIP #6: CUSTOMIZE THE SPACE TO FIT YOUR DESIGN NEEDS

Once you decide to convert part of, or all of, your garage into additional living space, be sure to incorporate any comforts you desire, like a state-of-the-art sound system for your new TV and video game room.

Most importantly, remember to have fun when creating and designing your new interior oasis in your garage!
