What Kind of Maintenance should I be doing to My Garage?

Q: What kind of maintenance should I be doing to my garage?

A: If you've put off doing garage maintenance and seasonal inspections, now is a great time to do it, before winter arrives. To help, we've put together some great maintenance and inspection tips for you, below.

Do a full inspection of your garage

Remove your cars, bikes, lawnmower and other items from the garage. You want to be able to see the walls, floor, and ceiling. Look for signs of water damage, which appear as discoloured stains. If you have windows, check for air leaks around them and re-caulk them.

Declutter your garage

If you have excess clutter lying around, pick it up and sort it. Sell any items of value that you no longer use, or donate them where applicable. Any other items that are junk, haul to the local recycling centre. Removing the clutter will help prevent problems with rodents, insects and other pests.

Check the entry door that connects to your house

Inspect the seals around the door. A great way to do this is to shut the garage door, turn off all the lights and have someone shine a flashlight around the door from inside the home. If you can see light coming through around the door, you need to replace the door seal.

Check the seals around the garage door

While you’re checking your entry door, now is also a great time to check the seals around the garage door. If you notice sunlight coming in from the sides, top, bottom or in between the panels, you need to replace the seals.

Remove dust, dirt, and cobwebs

If you notice cobwebs on the moving parts of your garage door opener and garage door, use a vacuum to remove them. Keeping the garage cleaned will help prevent these things from wearing off lubrication on the garage door track and moving parts.

Open and close the garage door

Listen as the garage door opens and closes. Does it make any strange sounds or does it run smoothly without any scraping or grinding? Does the door seem jerky or shakes as it moves? If you notice any of these things contact us for garage door maintenance.

If your garage door is older and needs major repairs, it may be time to consider a new garage door. Feel free to explore our website to learn more about our modern, advanced and energy-efficient garage doors.
