Q: What projects can I tackle in my garage to add value or space to my home?

A: If you’re tired of binge-watching TV and looking for something to do to keep busy lately, now is a great time to tackle some different types of garage projects. The right improvements to your garage could add value to your home and give you additional space to escape from the kids too!

Garage Project #1: Reorganize and Declutter

Before you can do any major projects, the first thing you need to do is reorganize and declutter the garage. Go through totes that have been piling up over the years. Get a tool cabinet to organize tools or use wall space and hang items up so they’re easy to find.

Garage Project #2: Upgrade to an Insulated Garage Door

If you want to enjoy using your garage year-round, you need to make sure you have an insulated garage door to keep out the cold during the winter and the heat during the summer. There are several different designs of insulated garage doors for your home that also add value and curb appeal.

Garage Project #3: Paint the Garage Floor

There’s a variety of products that are perfect for painting the garage floor (like epoxy resins), giving it a much-improved look over concrete. Some products will even seal cracks and cover up stains.

Garage Project #4: Insulate the Walls

If your walls aren’t insulated or they lack sufficient insulation, then add more. There is loose-fill insulation you can blow into the walls without having to tear out drywall. If your garage isn’t finished, then even better, because you can use fiberglass roll insulation. Another option is to order sound-proofing foam and apply it right to the walls in the garage. This option is great if you or your kids play musical instruments and you need somewhere to practice that won’t disturb others.

Garage Project #5: Add Some Shelving

Don’t overlook all that empty wall space in your garage. Hang up some shelves with the right support brackets to increase your storage space. You could also get bike hangers to hang up your bikes or use tire racks to store your off-season tires to get them off the floor to free up your floor space.

Garage Project #6: Create an Indoor Playroom for Your Kids

If you need a break from your kids, transform part of the garage space into a playroom where they can go and play for part of the day. Not only are they safe in the garage, but you also get a much needed mental-health break.

Garage Project #7: Create an Arts and Crafts Area

If you like putting models together, doing puzzles, sewing, painting, or other arts and crafts projects, you can create your own arts and crafts studio in part of your garage space. Spending time on arts and crafts you enjoy is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety.
